Myth: “Monsanto is against labeling GM foods”

Myth: “Monsanto is against labeling GM foods”

Fact: We at Monsanto do not oppose to labeling of food products. However, we support a federally driven initiative, and the FDA, as the US authority on food safety, is best positioned to address and determine US food labeling and policy and the associated requirements. We also believe a state-by-state patchwork of labeling laws will create confusion and uncertainty for consumers, and additionally would force consumers to pay more for the food they need. The Coalition for Safe Affordable Food (CFSAF) is advocating for a responsible federal policy framework set by law that helps protect consumers and facilitates informed consumer choices.  We support these efforts by CFSAF.  You can learn more at www.coalitionforsafeaffordablefood.org. Finally, a labeling initiative should not be premised on whether or not GM products are safe, since there are no safety issues regarding such products. The American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest scientific society and publisher of Science magazine, says, “GM crops are the most extensively tested crops ever added to our food supply. Legally mandating such a label can only serve to mislead and falsely alarm consumers.”
